Hey Reader,
In the last 8 years, I’ve done a lot of discovery calls, and not every call ended up with a new collaboration.
And I don’t have a problem with that at all. Not every business owner is supposed to be my client. Let me tell you why.
Even though my clients have come through referrals since 2018, I always have a discovery call with a potential client.
I want to feel if we are a right fit for each other.
When I just started my VA business, I had the urge to say yes to everybody I had a call with, even clients who objected to my rates.
So, here’s what you could do when you are on a call and a potential client brings up that they can’t afford you.
There are two things you could do:
✺ Say no to this client.
In the beginning, I had a hard time saying no to clients because I needed the money, right? So, even if it didn’t feel good at all, I said yes. But I learned that I would get really frustrated down the line. I also learned in all my experience that when you say no to a potential client, another client who is really happy to work with you will come into your world.
But what if everything about this potential client feels good to you, and they mention they can’t afford you? Then I would offer the following solution:
✺ Offer a smaller package.
Maybe now you have packages for 15, 20, and 25 hours a month. Offer them the possibility to work with you for 10 hours. You’re not reducing your rate because I would never recommend doing that [We don’t do discounts here — we do value]. But you do give them the opportunity to work with you when you offer a smaller package.
Do this only when you’re really vibing with a potential client.
I’ve put every Discovery Call strategy I’ve been using for years in the 4-figure Tech VA Membership.
Choose which option you want to use based on how you feel about the potential client.
This way, you are working with amazing clients who don't frustrate the hell out of you.
